LiDAR scanners
The challenge
Scanning LiDAR mechanisms each introduce distinct drawbacks. Galvo scanners offer precision and large apertures but suffer from size, inertia, optical complexity for 2D scanning, and sensitivity to shock and thermal drift. MEMS mirrors enable compact designs but are constrained by small apertures, limited scan angle–size trade-offs, fragility, fatigue, and often resonant, non-flexible motion. Polygon scanners deliver very high scan speeds but are bulky, power-hungry, limited to single-axis scanning, inflexible in scan patterns, and subject to wear and facet-to-facet nonuniformity.
Our solution
Optotune’s 2D Fast steering mirrors based on voice-coil technology offer a compact, cost-effective alternative to traditional galvos, MEMS mirrors, and polygon scanners. By enabling true single-element 2D beam steering with large scan angles (100° FOV) combined with a 15 mm mirror size, closed-loop position control with a low latency interface, the solution reduces optical complexity, alignment effort, and system size. It delivers robust performance under shock and vibration, flexible programmable scan patterns, and reliable point placement, making it well suited for demanding industrial LiDAR applications.
