Steering mirrors

Optotune’s compact fast and fine steering mirrors use robust voice-coil actuation to enable precise 2D beam deflection. Fast steering mirrors are designed for large tilt angles and include integrated optical position feedback for applications like field-of-view (FOV) expansion.

Fine steering mirrors offer an ultra-thin design with a large mirror surface, making them ideal for small, high-precision adjustments and laser wobbling.

  • Large clear apertures and tilt angles
  • 2D beam deflection with a single optical element (reduced reflection loss, no beam-shift)
  • Robust voice-coil actuation
  • Optical real-time position feedback
  • Compact & lightweight

Fast steering mirrors (MR) redirect light by rapidly tilting a reflective surface around two axes. In Optotune’s fast steering mirrors, a voice-coil actuator generates smooth and precise motion with minimal wear, supported by a long-lifetime precision bearing. The virtual rotation point is positioned close to the mirror surface, ensuring accurate beam alignment with minimal lateral shift. A built-in optical position sensor provides real-time feedback for closed-loop PID control, supported by onboard calibration and temperature monitoring for stable long-term performance. With low-latency analog interfaces and a choice of high-power mirror coatings, Optotune’s fast steering mirrors deliver compact, reliable, and highly responsive 2D beam steering.

Optotune’s compact fine steering mirrors (FMR) use a voice-coil actuator placed around the reflective surface to enable precise 2-axis motion. A single large mirror provides true 2D beam steering for low- to high-power lasers with micro-radian resolution, while the bearingless design ensures long operational lifetime.

Optotune’s lightweight, compact fast steering mirrors (FSM) deliver large apertures with wide tilt angles, enabling true 2D beam steering using a single optical element—thereby reducing reflection losses, eliminating beam shift, and simplifying overall system design. When paired with a camera, the device enables field-of-view (FOV) expansion. A robust voice-coil actuator combined with real-time optical feedback ensures precise and repeatable motion control.

Optotune’s compact fine steering mirrors (FMR) deliver large apertures with small tilt angles in an ultra-compact footprint. Fast response times, high-power mirror coatings, and the ability to position a beam dump directly behind the mirror make these devices suitable for demanding applications such as 2D wobbling.

Fast steering mirrors

Fast steering mirrors from Optotune have the compactness and tip-tilt capability of a MEMS mirror, but the robustness of a Galvo mirror. Established voice-coil technology, combined with accurate optical feedback, enables many applications.

Common applications:

Optotune’s fine steering mirror series provides precise, fast 2D beam control with a large clear aperture in a compact form factor. High-power coatings and the option to place a beam dump directly behind the mirror make it well-suited for demanding applications like 2D wobbling. Its bearing-free design ensures excellent repeatability and long operational lifetime.
